I.M.R.T.
IMRT is the newest form of treatment offered at the Simon Kramer
Cancer Institute. Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is a
precise technique of external beam radiation. Using computer-
generated images of the tumor or the surgery site, the radiation
oncologist can find the size, shape and location of the area that needs
treatment.

During IMRT treatments, thousands of very thin beams of radiation
are aimed at the cancer. Each beam can be programed to a different
intensity and a different angle. These highly customized beams meet
inside your body at the tumor site. Because the radiation is so
carefully controlled and planned, intensity modulated radiation
therapy can spare nearby healthy tissues, resulting in fewer side
effects than standard external beam radiation. Intensity modulated
radiation therapy may be used for breast cancers, as well as prostate,
head and neck cancer.
